Innovation, Disruption, Amazon.......!!!
The buzz words of the marketplace: Innovation, Disruption and Amazon. Are you a mid-tier company concerned about these words? Take control and implement a focus and a strategy - a strategy that rolls itself around my byline - "Human capital and innovation are the source of all long term economic success".
We have all heard them way too much in recent times and we're all looking at ways to do something about it! Company's such as Amazon don't have exclusivity in this domain. Anyone in business can be an innovator and disrupt the business norms. It's just that many businesses don't know how to step out of 'Safe Mode' and explore new thoughts and ideas. Sure, there can be an element of risk (although there doesn't have to be) but it is all relative to the risk of NOT developing and re-inventing and thus becoming irrelevant and obsolete (think Kodak and Nokia).
Innovate by identifying the skills and thinking of the people within your business, the human capital. Overlay innovation with logic and processes. Recognise the strengths your people possess and use these strengths to their and your advantage.
Firstly, identify the thinking skills in your team. Everyone has an area (and there are 4 possibilities here) from where their thinking originates. Rational, practical, relational and experimental. Any business needs input from all four areas to have Whole Brain Thinking. If you want to innovate and you have someone with an experimental or innovative thinking style in your team, listen to their ideas. Then encompass the thinking from the other areas such as logic/rational and detail/practical. Relational/humanistic thinking will automatically resonate because everyone wants to feel that they have contributed to the success of the organisation. This will do that. Everyone will feel part of a bigger picture and what better way is there to promote staff engagement and a killer corporate culture than have a team that is Wholly invested in the business moving forward.
Time and time again I have seen employees try to put their ideas forward to upper management, only to have their thoughts fall on deaf ears. Management can often suffer from the smartest person in the room syndrome where no one else could possibly have a great idea because they didn't think of it themselves. If this is the case, they need to get over themselves, use some emotional intelligence and maybe they might hear something from a team member that is the seed of a brilliant idea that may create their own disruption. Use your organisation's human capital. Actively listen to the collective perspectives of all the team and tap into everyone's thinking.
As an added bonus, instead of losing great talent within your business because the staff do not feel included or appreciated in the organisation, staff morale and retention will increase and you will become an employer of choice with an inclusive, innovative company culture.
Tomorrow's thought leaders have the emotional intelligence to tap into the human capital resources within their organisation and use all that available thinking. They know that alone they don't have all the answers but collectively with Whole Brain Thinking they can strategise to be ahead of the rest and be a differentiator in their field.
Identify the thinking strengths of your staff and give them the platform to combine all this talent to bring together ideas for future growth. Whole Brain Thinking can be achieved with HBDI, the assessment tool I use to identify the diversity of thinking styles in any organisation.
