Use the Benefits of the Thinking Group, But Not the Dysfunction of Groupthink
Groupthink: the practice of thinking or making decisions as a group, resulting typically in unchallenged, poor quality decision making.
As a business practice, groupthink can be disastrous. However, out there in the real world it happens all too frequently. Every business wants to have unity and cohesiveness where everyone gets along. There is less friction. Everyone is on the same wavelength. No one challenges the status quo and so things plod along and everyone is happy. Right?
NO, because groupthink stifles thinking and without individual thinking, there will be soon be no business or at best it plods along and eventually stalls. Individual thinking needs to occur first, then the individuals come together as a group to have a thinking group. How can the ideas of essentially one person who then ostensibly bullies everyone else to agree with their thinking come up with the right thinking every time? Obviously they cannot. There are however plenty of organisations even in our supposed enlightened business world of today, where 'yes' men and women still 'tow the company line' in fear of ostracism. It is easier not to be a dissenter. Don't rock the boat and you will be safe. Safe, however doesn't challenge and without challenging thinking in this economic climate, you may as well shut up shop and go home. Whilst it may seem easier and be less work to agree and be part of groupthink, it will not be easier in the long term when you have no job because the business has ceased to exist.
Whole Brain® Thinking gives you the tools with the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument® (HBDI®) to assess the thinking preferences of everyone in the group. That knowledge gives the group the power to access everyone's diverse thinking style so that groupthink will never be a concern. As the tenets of HBDI®showcase, everyone has a different way of thinking so how one person approaches a situation will not be the same as the next person. We all have a unique thinking style which is played out in our lives every day. The Whole Brain® Thinking of HBDI® is the science of thinking preferences. Your thinking style influences your relationship with colleagues and clients in decision making, harnessing opportunities, problem solving, communications and just about everything else in your professional and personal life.
Better teams are all about better thinking. Rethink your business thinking.
HBDI® is the preferred assessment tool of Thinking DNA.
