Online Retailers are here to Stay BUT that Doesn't Mean the Death of the Hands on Shopping Experience
Retail has always been a tough gig. I know. In a past incarnation I was a successful clothing retailer but as with anything, it was not without its challenges. Nothing worthwhile is easy. In any retail business there are a myriad of challenges that need to be faced and overcome each and every day just to keep the doors open and the registers ringing. Those challenges did not extend to the online retail market of today, which was at that time in its infancy and so the impact was only minimal, but it was obvious that it was growing and would become a significant force in the market.
Many retail operations have not survived in the marketplace of today yet others have thrived. However, retail stores have always come and gone and survival today is really no different to years gone. Sure, the challenges may come in a different form but the solutions are essentially the same.
Retailers need to think from their customer's perspective. Why do you buy online in a virtual store on one hand and why do you shop in a real store on the other hand? Online shopping is easy, often cheap, (think women's disposable fashion), can be done at your leisure and the choice is seemingly endless. So why do you go to a shop at all?
For the experience. For the interaction. To touch and feel and try on and get someone's opinion. We love the theatre of retail. The store is a destination in itself. New products, new gadgets, new experiences. Retail therapy is really a thing! Shopping is an outing. We may go alone for a bit of me time or with a partner or a friend or family member to talk and connect and share the adventure. You will often also treat yourself to a coffee and cake or a bit of lunch or even a beer or wine to top off the day. It can serve as a de-stresser, hence the term 'retail therapy '. There is a real satisfaction in finding that certain something that makes you feel really good. It lifts your spirits and gives you a positive vibe. You enjoy the experience.
There is a real and positive psychological aspect of well-being and connectivity that can be derived from going shopping. If retailers are switched on and tap into the thinking perspective of their customers, hands on retail will never die. While online shopping is here to stay, so is the experience of real store shopping. Smart, savvy retailers can be successful in both environments. Give your customers a great in-store experience they remember and you will have them as customers again and again.
